GARY'S SISTINE CHAPEL

In Architechture, a lunette is a half-moon shaped space, either masonry or void.  A system of intersecting vaults produces lunettes on the wall surfaces above a cornice.  In the structure of the Sistine Chapel, the lunettes inspired Michaelangelo to come up with inventive compositions for the spaces.

In the lunettes and Webs above, Michaelangelo painted the Forefathers of Christ, the forerunners of his coming and therefore of the Redemption.   Beginning with Abraham and shown not so much as historical images but as symbolic figurations of mankind caught in various attitudes the figures are arranged in family units.
